Maegor I Targaryen, the third Targaryen king, was a formidable warrior and rider of Balerion. His six-year reign was shaped by conflict with the Faith Militant, harsh punishments, and a determination to secure the crown by force. The epithet ‘the Cruel’ reflects the violence associated with his rule, while the succession crisis surrounding his six marriages deepened the turmoil after Aegon the Conqueror’s death.
